Online Flute/Theory Lesson

Online lesson is a brand new way of learning music since the pandemic, we never knew this was possible previously. Some of my students had to go back to their hometown and some of them is new students from another state/country, all of our online lessons went well thanks to technology. Although from f2f to online is a big shift, but this doesn’t affected the quality of music learning.

To ensure the quality of teaching, I purchased a good USB microphone so that my students can hear my instructions and demonstrations clearly. **[Audio Technica AT2020USB+]**

Using google classroom to keep track lesson’s comments and homework, student can always check the comments I wrote and download the materials I posted. Parents are added into the same google classroom to monitor the progression together with teacher. Got this inspiration from the university system where I started to teach this year.

Google classroom was used in ASWARA to keep track and collect student’s assignments/assessments throughout the semester. I fully utilised this system to maximise the learning outcome.

Classical flute lesson for all age groups (kids and adults), face to face or online.
Physical f2f lessons are available depends on location (student’s house or teacher’s studio). Click Area or contact teacher for more information.
Classes are designed and conduct individually in order to be specific and focus on individual growth. No music background is totally fine to start.
Music theory or aural skills could be included in the lesson.
Different fees on 4 levels : beginner, intermediate, advanced and diploma.
- Beginner level : Beginner – Grade 2
- Intermediate level : Grade 3 – 5
- Advanced level : Grade 6 – 8 Learn more about levels

Each lesson is one hour, longer duration of lesson (1.5-2hours) might needed for advanced-diploma students based on teacher’s suggestion.
Learning is always step by step. There is not a problem for those who don’t know how to read music score.
Learning for self achievements and leisure is encouraged.
Prepare student for ABRSM / Trinity / IGCSE practical exam.
Prepare student for ABRSM theory exam depending on student’s preferences.

Sze Gee is a flutist & flute teacher based in Kuala Lumpur & Petaling Jaya area. She is currently the flute lecturer at National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA), and copy editor at Malaysian Journal of Music (MJM).

She is actively involved in both performing arts and education scene in Malaysia. Her lessons includes a balance of theory and practical approaches, music reading, playing techniques, embouchure, breath control, phrases shaping, emotions approaches, articulations, fingering techniques, musicianship skills, music history and everything else you need to know to play the flute.

As an orchestral instrument, playing flute is not only about playing it alone, but ensemble techniques are important too, ensemble tips and listening tricks is included as a part of her teaching routine. Check out the videos she recorded with her student!

Is the grades for flute same with the piano?
Yes. Western classical music instrument exam’s grade are the same, and a flute player can take exam grade by grade just like pianist.
Which examination board offers flute practical exam?
Just like piano, the famous and most frequent used music examination board such as ABRSM and Trinity offers flute practical exam. And there is a syllabus by the examination board which clearly listed down the repertoire you should play in the exam.
I played the flute, but I’m not sure which level am I.
Don’t worry, teacher can judge based on the your playing.
Is it ok if I don’t want to take exam?
Yes, it’s totally fine that you don’t take exam, exam is just a way self encouragement/achievement, you still can play well without exam.
What will I learn if I don’t want to take the exam?
You’ll still learning step by step and everything you need to know before you move to a higher level. You’ll still need to learn the important repertoire just like the others did. The only difference is they are registering for exam but you are just learning for improvement.
How long does it takes to improve/to reach certain grades?
Based on past experiences, Sze Gee’s students generally take 1 year to finish beginner until Grade2 level, another 1-1.5 year to reach Grade 5, and another 1.5-2 years to complete Grade 8. But bare in mind, the progression is much depended on student’s physical condition, learning speed and also time spent to practice. There were a few students who progress very fast and passed Grade5/6 exam within 1.5 year, or able to play Grade8/diploma repertoire within 2-3 years of learning from beginner level; but there are also slow learners who took 1-1.5 year to complete each grade.
How do I judge am I a fast or slow learner?
You will need to take a lesson with Sze Gee and she can give you feedback directly in the session. It is impossible to judge by a phone call or a few text messages.
I don’t have a flute, can I start my lesson?
Unfortunately, you must own an instrument to start any lesson. You may contact Sze Gee for advise on flute purchasing.
I am a beginner and a keen learner, what flute should I purchase?
Yamaha YFL-212 or YFL-222 is a standard choice for beginner learner. Muramatsu flutes is a good choice for those who have budget. If you have other brand/model/budget in mind, please contact teacher for further consultations. You can also contact teacher for recommended sellers.
I saw a flute in Lazada and it only costs me 300 bucks, can I use it for lesson?
NO YOU CAN’T. Sorry to say, that is not a flute, but a piece of metal toy. It can’t produce proper tone colour and very hard to even making a sound, which may caused poor learning experience and momentum.

What is the age to start flute lesson?

– It’s great to start learning music at an early age, but parents must make sure students are both physically and academically ready to begin studying the flute.

– The most important factor to decide whether a kid can start playing flute, is the size of the palm and arm. In order to facilitate playing all the keys of flute.

– As a wind instrument, it is also important that the student has a developed lung capacity to play. The youngest age for asian to start usually begin around 7-9 years old.

– Younger students can use a curve head joint to reduce the length of the flute, while not affecting the overall sound quality or technique. But I would suggest to just wait for another 1-2 years for them to grow and able to support holding a regular flute. Because you won’t need the curve head joint anymore in your lifetime flute playing journey when you grown up.

– Adult classes are available, it is never too late to learn music.

-Unlike the guitar or piano, playing the flute is less intuitive and therefore it is not an instrument that can easily be self-taught. You need someone to give you direct feedback and to avoid development of bad habits. It is way more challenging to change a bad habit than learning a new technique.

Please noted that learning music is not about taking exams. Ms. Chew do encourage students to take exam to gain experiences and build self confidence, but will not recommend student to take exam if they are not up to standard. And for those who leaning just for fun, especially adult students, taking exam or not is totally based on their own choice.

For exam, not every grade is needed to take in order to proceed to next grade. Ms. Chew encourages her student to skip some grades depending on their learning progression. But, although skipping grades, the necessary techniques required to play flute will NOT BE SKIPPED.
