Sze Gee is a flutist & flute teacher based in Kuala Lumpur & Petaling Jaya area. She is currently the flute lecturer at National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA), and copy editor at Malaysian Journal of Music (MJM).

She is actively involved in both performing arts and education scene in Malaysia. Her lessons includes a balance of theory and practical approaches, music reading, playing techniques, embouchure, breath control, phrases shaping, emotions approaches, articulations, fingering techniques, musicianship skills, music history and everything else you need to know to play the flute.

As an orchestral instrument, playing flute is not only about playing it alone, but ensemble techniques are important too, ensemble tips and listening tricks is included as a part of her teaching routine. Check out the videos she recorded with her student!

Sze Gee is a professional flutist based in Klang Valley area, who holds a master in music performance (flute major) and qualified to teach all levels of flute students (from beginner up to tertiary stage). She is currently the flute lecturer of National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA). With over 15 years of playing flute as primary instrument, she focused on flute performance/education, a high quality learning progress and experience is guaranteed.

What is the age to start flute lesson?

– It’s great to start learning music at an early age, but parents must make sure students are both physically and academically ready to begin studying the flute.

– The most important factor to decide whether a kid can start playing flute, is the size of the palm and arm. In order to facilitate playing all the keys of flute.

– As a wind instrument, it is also important that the student has a developed lung capacity to play. The youngest age for asian to start usually begin around 7-9 years old.

– Younger students can use a curve head joint to reduce the length of the flute, while not affecting the overall sound quality or technique. But I would suggest to just wait for another 1-2 years for them to grow and able to support holding a regular flute. Because you won’t need the curve head joint anymore in your lifetime flute playing journey when you grown up.

****Lessons are specially design for different age group.****

-Unlike the guitar or piano, playing the flute is less intuitive and therefore it is not an instrument that can easily be self-taught. You need someone to give you direct feedback and to avoid development of bad habits. It is way more challenging to change a bad habit than learning a new technique.

There are 4 levels for Ms Chew’s flute lesson :

  1. Beginner : Grade 0 – 2
  2. Intermediate : Grade 3 – 5
  3. Advanced : Grade 6 – 8
  4. Diploma : DipABRSM/ARSM/LRSM/FRSM/ATCL/LTCL/FTCL

**Grading based on UK examination board system.

**Different fee for different levels.

Example of topics included in lesson: 

  • How to hold the flute correctly, the proper posture, the fingering for notes and how to breathe while playing the flute.

  • Repertoire in intermediate level: etudes, studies, famous classical repertoire (eg: Intermezzo de Carmen, Telemann Sonata, Sicilienne, Vivaldi Sonata, etc…)
  • Repertoire in advance level: etudes, studies, single/full movement of significant classical repertoire (eg: Mozart Concerto, Bach Sonata, CPE Bach Sonata, Debussy Syrinx, Chopin Theme and Variation, etc…)
  • Repertoire in diploma level: etudes, studies, full movement of classical/contemporary repertoire (eg: Poulenc Sonata, Faure Fantasie, Charminade Concertino, Schubert Theme and Variation, Prokofiev Sonata, Reinecke Concerto, etc…)

Repertoires and method books is vary based on student’s level and learning preferences.

Please noted that learning music is not about taking exams. Ms. Chew do encourage students to take exam to gain experiences and build self confidence, but will not recommend student to take exam if they are not up to standard. And for those who leaning just for fun, especially adult students, taking exam or not is totally based on their own choice.

For exam, not every grade is needed to take in order to proceed to next grade. Ms. Chew encourages her student to skip some grades depending on their learning progression. But, although skipping grades, the necessary techniques required to play flute will NOT BE SKIPPED.
